Mont de Milieu, the mountain in the middle, historically marked the frontier between Burgundy and Champagne. It has a south-facing aspect - rare in Chablis. The warm, sunny aspect is on full display in this 2023, which is drawn from three parcels spread across the top, middle, and bottom sections of the premier cru. It is as detailed and comlpete a portrait of the cru as you will find. While the fruit on the nose is open and intese, the palate reminds us just how taut and steely Samuel builds his Chablis. It is straight and incisive, with a concentrated, saline flicker on the finish. The balance of minerality, tension, and energy makes this a highly inviting glass.
Their own three plots at the Chablis end of the vineyard, with old vines in two of the plots. The yield was only 45 hl/ha here even in 2023. Pale lemon colour. A very stylish complete nose, with its extra touches of white fruit and flesh. Excellent salinity behind, a real mineral crunch.
From three different sectors within the appellation and cropped at around 45hl/ha, the 2023 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru sees 20% aging in 500-liter barrels for 12 months and then 6 months in stainless steel. Struck flint on the nose, a little smoky, very intense and delineated, this is very captivating. The palate is taut and saline, very harmonious and one of the most nuanced of Billaud's Premier Crus. Hints of praline emerge right on the finish. Excellent.
