2023 Meursault, Michel Lafarge

2023 Meursault, Michel Lafarge

Cellar Circle Exclusive

The Lafarge family’s parcels of Chardonnay lie on the Volnay side of Meursault, naturally. The vines are over 50 years old, on a terroir that has around 30 centimetres of clay before the vines hit the limestone below. A charming wine with subtle creaminess, and aromas of white flowers and fresh peach. There is a quiet tension running through the wine.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Meursault Village comes from two parcels. This has decent lift on the nose with white flowers and light leesy scents. The palate is well balanced with a rounded texture (a bit like a "mini-Charmes") that dovetails into a spicy, stem ginger-tinged finish. Drink over the next five or six years.

Racked before the harvest and returned to barrel on fine lees. Mid lemon colour. Also quite extrovert on the nose but with much more finesse than in the old days. Why would that be? Much less sulphur these days. Pressed cool in 2023 over 4 and a half hour, which is also a refinement on previous practice. Not pretending it’s a noble terroir but now the winemaking has ameliorated the very rustic element. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Dec 2024.
