You can really feel the character of the poor stony soil found in Puligny here: the wine stands in contrast to Jean-Baptiste’s Meursault premiers crus in its floral delicacy and racy edge. This superb 2019 should also open up a little earlier than the Meursaults, offering its enticing blossom character on the nose and lacy fine acidity with steely acidity on the palate. No need to wait too long here, this will sing from early on: its tight coil and fine grain are part of its charm. So fine and so promising.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs Gains 1er Cru, matured in around 25% new oak, has a powerful, perfumed bouquet of apricot, blood orange and grapefruit, very expressive and demanding attention. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, orange peel and grapefruit on the front palate and a tight, minerally back end. Good focus and energy here. This has a lot of potential.
