2010 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard

As the name suggests, stony soil predominates in this vineyard, perched higher up on the hill from which come some of the best examples of Chassagne. A core of crystalline stonefruit on the nose, which shows wonderful purity and expression. There is weight and richness to the mouthfeel but with a balancing freshness which is the hallmark of the vintage. A seriously pretty wine.

2010 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard

One of Burgundy’s most charming domaines, Fontaine-Gagnard is run by Celine Fontaine, with her parents Richard Fontaine and Laurence Gagnard. Richard founded the estate when he married Laurence: his first vintage was 1985, produced from his inlaws’ vineyards. However, this nearly never happened: the first time they met, he almost misidentified the 1978 Montrachet, the estate’s crown jewel, as Aligoté, due to its high acidity. Fortunately he kept his mouth shut, and Fontaine-Gagnard was born.
