2024 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Michel Lafarge

2024 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Michel Lafarge

Cellar Circle Exclusive

This vineyard has been owned by the Lafarge family since the domaine was founded, and is arguably their most famous wine. It is often serious and intense in its youth, but can also show wonderful sweetness of fruit and pretty minerality in youth, it’s hard to imagine it shutting down. Nevertheless, experience dictates that this wine will benefit from some time in the cellar, and given time, its true potential will be realised.

Tasting notes

There are just seven barrels of the 2024 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru from their hectare of vines. Nevertheless, this has an elegant, refined bouquet with brambly red berries, rooibos, rose petals and light crushed stone scents. Impressive delineation. The palate is supple and pliant, certainly more fruit concentration here with a harmonious lilting finish that feels very seductive. This will be difficult to resist once in bottle. Delicious.

An even ruby crimson. A little more austere than the Caillerets on the nose, indeed classic Clos de Chênes in youth. Taking time to tease out the nose, but in the mouth, not quite immediately, appears a really significant burst of energetic fruit, as much cherry as raspberry, good acidity, indeed a classical structure. Drink from 2033-2040. Tasted Oct 2025.
