2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, Marchand-Tawse (Vignes de la Famille Tawse)

This remote east-facing vineyard sits at an elevation of 400m. Mark says that on a crisp summer morning you can see all the way to Mont Blanc from here. Its position means, although bathed in morning sun, it does not have much hot afternoon sun, and fruit ripens slowly here. It is often picked last, and in 2023, Mark used 26% whole-bunch, succeeding in producing a Gevrey with silky fine tannins and a velvety length.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru includes 20% whole bunch this year. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with vivacious red berry fruit, superb delineation and a greater sense of mineralité than some of Tawse's other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious and silky smooth with pure red fruit notes and a poised, persistent finish. The 2022 was great, so is this.

30% whole bunch, 30% new wood. This is one of the more elegant wines, little raspberries and some alpine strawberries, understated but long and fine in detail. Lovely graceful aftertaste, I think the Champeaux has been judged perfectly this year. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.
