2023 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Près le Cellier, Domaine Méo-Camuzet

2023 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Près le Cellier, Domaine Méo-Camuzet

Cellar Circle Exclusive

One third of the Méo vines in this parcel were planted in 1920, and their vines reach metres deep into the soils, producing formidably concentrated fruit. The rest of the blend is made up of fruit from vines planted in the 1960s. This opens with spiced notes of nutmeg, incense and a little five spice which melds effortlessly with the dark cherry fruit. This is supple and energetic in feel with clearly a long ageing potential.

Tasting notes

Gleaned from three hectares of vine, the 2023 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes across a little sultry and introverted on the nose, even as I rigorously swirl the glass. Light rose petal scents and a touch of licorice emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, nice structure and some lactic notes emanating from 80% new oak toward the finish. Give this time in bottle.

One of the darker purple colours with corresponding richness of fruit on the nose. Ripe plum and boysenberry. Crisper fruit on the palate with good tension, a mix of red and black fruit. This is the plot round the Château and there will be a separate Grand Maupertuis cuvée (not sampled) with a cuvee name. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.
