Take the stress out of buying a gift, let them choose exactly what they want.
Of all the recent purchases made by Jacques Devauges and the team at Lambrays, you can tell this is the one they are most thrilled at. They are now proud owners of 0.9 hectares of this little-known but utterly fabulous Nuits St Georges premier cru. The vines were planted almost 100 years ago in 1924. The wine shows old vine complexity, Vosne decadence, and Lambrays sophistication.
The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges La Richemone 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch (compare that to say, Pascal Mugneret, who used 100%). The bouquet is, again, quite stemmy at the moment, with dark berry fruit, stewed black tea, light forest floor scents and tobacco emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It is quite spicy and peppery, though the stems are nicely embroidered on the finish. Good potential.
A dark ruby colour. The bouquet is not quite all apparent but suggests a vast intensity of fruit and a fair amount of spice. The fruit is nearer black than red and the whole bunch spice is really quite prominent but once you delve past these, the second half of the palate delivers the absolute majesty of this great vineyard. The slightest hint of fresh chocolate appears far back. One can see the volume of the vintage alongside the exceptional class of the vineyard and some pretty skilled winemaking. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.
