Amongst a strong lineup of Premiers Crus in David’s cellar, this is always our favourite. It comes from a parcel with a hard limestone bedrock, producing a wine that is marked by its surprising suppleness. In 2023 David used around 10-15% whole bunch – this is a wine marked by vibrancy and minerality. A tense core of red cherry fruit lifts to reveal a Pinot of real finesse with a saline finish.
The 2023 Santenay Clos des Mouches 1er Cru includes 15% whole bunch. The bouquet has fine mineralité, blackcurrant/blueberry fruit and touches of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, white pepper and light orange peel notes. Quite precise with good length, there is a pleasant black pepper aftertaste.
Glowing purple. Some density to the fruit, though less floral or immediately juicy than some. The fruit is more in length than density, a little blood orange in the mix, more complex structure. Fair length. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.
