Maranges is the final limit of the Côte d’Or, and a source of crunchy, great value reds, if you follow the right grower. This is actually a blend of village and premier cru fruit (from 1er Cru Clos Rousseau), which David declassifies to give his village Maranges more volume and quality. The name Gryphée is a type of fossilised mollusc found within the limestone soil. This year David used around 15% whole bunches which has given a little peppery lift to the charming dark cherry fruit tinged with crushed violets. Lithe and supple, this is a great buy.
The 2023 Maranges Aux Gryphées is done with 15-20% whole bunch and includes 45% Premier Cru fruit. There is admirable mineralité and precision on the nose to its blackberry and light blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with orange rind on the entry, turning quite peppery on the finish with a touch of dryness. Fine.
10-15% whole bunch vinification. A lively fresh ruby colour. The equality of the fruit is, as usual for this cuvee, quite excellent, cherries and raspberries of noble standing. Good tannins here, all balanced, with an attractive length. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted Nov 2024.
