2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny, Domaine Bruno Clair

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny, Domaine Bruno Clair

This clos is a monopole of the domaine found right at the centre point of Gevrey, next to Ruchottes-Chambertin. It always produces grapes with millerandage (small berries) and so the wine has an intense concentration and exquisite finesse. It’s all red-fruited power and mineral length, typical of senior Gevrey terroirs. The 2023 boasts an alluring nose of sappy black cherries, red currants, and on the palate there are silky supple tannins that add to the structure of bright acidity and textural finish.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru has around 50% whole bunch in the blend. Here, the stems are just a little more apparent, leaning more toward the vegetal side (in a good manner). The palate is medium-bodied and very linear, a little slender for a Premier Cru… Hopefully it will flesh out during the remainder of its time in barrel.

Beautiful colour here, a darker crimson, and the fruit is magical. Perfectly on the red and black cusp while the whole bunches add a floral note. The Clos du Fonteny is on terrific form today with a fine balance of acidity to finish, alongside balanced tannins. A fine long aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024. Five stars.
