2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques, Domaine Bruno Clair

2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques, Domaine Bruno Clair

Cellar Circle Exclusive

Bruno Clair is one of only five producers of this revered Premier Cru, that many regard as equal to the Gevrey Grands Crus. The Clairs refer to it as ‘the Prince of Gevrey’. It is steep by Burgundian standards, with clay-rich soil. A dramatic storm in June hit the Combe de Lavaux meaning yields were once again down here in 2023, bucking the general trend. But what they did make shows a suave power, and a cool, controlled, elegance.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers an extremely focused and detailed bouquet with vibrant, mineral-inflected redcurrant and strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate features ripe dark cherry and strawberry on the entry, with a hint of vanilla from the oak. It finishes quite linear in style, as if it's holding something back for later. This is one for the patient among you.

Mid crimson. Super sensual straight away on the nose. Immediate natural class here, though not the most concentrated Clos St-Jacques. Once again, they seem to have hit the cusp of red and black. A fine long graceful finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.
