2023 Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru, Sylvain Cathiard

Cellar Circle Exclusive

The grandest wine in the cellar, and also the one made in the smallest volumes. The power and complexity of the fruit matched with the new oak is extraordinary.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in two-thirds new oak, is actually cut from a similar cloth to the Les Suchots—more about finesse and delineation than horsepower. If you are seeking transparency in your Pinot Noir then these aromatics are for you. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins. This is understated with wonderful symmetry and poise, yet dare I say that the Les Suchots and possibly the Aux Malconsorts are the better wines this year?

A vibrant ruby colour. The bouquet is higher toned than Malconsorts, all clearly in vivacious red berry fruit. The palate is more linear than the Malconsorts, less seductive perhaps, but with a classical backbone, which will show its class with considerably longer in bottle. The finish is both persistent and exquisite. Drink from 2033-2043. Tasted Nov 2024.
