Like the Volnay Taillepieds, Les Rugiens is one of the smaller cuvées in the Buffet stable. It comes from the upper part of the vineyard, planted with vines that are now well over their hundred year mark. All work here is done by horse, and the attention to detail continues in the cellar. Rather tense and vibrant, there is a muscular power that hums beneath the surface of redcurrant and red cherry fruit. The 2023 shows real purity and salinity – a wine of terroir. Unlike some of the Volnay Premiers Crus from this domaine, this wine will need some time, so tuck it away for a few years.
The 2023 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru is refined on the nose with a mixture of red and black fruit, forest floor and rose petals scents coming through with time. It's not as intense as other vintages but nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, conveying a sense of symmetry that is quite beguiling. Very harmonious on the finish, this is a wonderful Rugiens.
Not the deepest in colour and rather more subtle on the nose. A refined cherry here, which just builds beautifully on the palate with a fabulous aftertaste. Not the most obviously concentrated but much finer and longer than the Poutures which was picked the same day. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Oct 2024.
