2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Michel Lafarge

2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Michel Lafarge

Cellar Circle Exclusive

This vineyard has been owned by the Lafarge family since the domaine was founded, and is arguably their most famous wine. It is often serious in its youth, but can also show wonderful sweetness of fruit and pretty minerality in youth, it’s hard to imagine it shutting down. There is intensity yet lightness and poise in this 2023. Aromas of wilted rose petal, pink peppercorn and red cherry fruit emerge from the glass. Experience dictates that this wine will benefit from some time in the cellar, and given time, its true potential will be realised.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a harmonious bouquet with slightly blacker fruit than the Caillerets, and hints of pencil shavings and bay leaf emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh and quite saline yet certainly elegant, with an understated finish that lingers. It is already oozing class.

An even crimson. As with all the Lafarge wines this year there is an immediate softness to the fruit which belies what is to follow. The striking point here is how much more structure there is on the back of the palate which tightens up the wine just so it can release itself even later. Drink from 2033-2045. Tasted Dec 2024.
