2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Petits Monts, Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet

2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Petits Monts, Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet

With Richebourg and Cros Parantoux as neighbours, you can expect great things from this vineyard. Amélie has five separate plots across half a hectare (although she gives some of the production back to her aunt, so there is never ever enough to meet demand). The site is so steep and inaccessible that no tractors can reach it, and all work is done by horse or hand. The 2022 has 50% whole-bunch, which helps give the already exceptionally concentrated fruit some lift and flow. She’s worked hard on this cuvée, which could tend towards reduction. Switching to concrete tanks for fermentation has helped, and the potential of quality here is already easy to see tasting from barrel. So persistent, with Vosne’s powerful, velvet-like tannins.

Tasting notes

The Petits Mont vineyard is worked by hand rather than machine. 50% whole bunch vinification. Concentrated and with some class but not quite giving yet, full dark raspberry, some tannins, spicy to finish, very backward. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru contains 50% stems. It is blessed with one of the finest perfumes from the Domaine: dark berry fruit, crushed limestone, rose petals and sea cave - very complex and with wonderful transparency. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and very smooth in texture. There’s finely pitched acidity with a caressing, red-fruited finish. The sapidity leaves you going back for more. Gorgeous.
