This monopole grand cru in the heart of Vosne-Romanée between two Domaine de la Romanée-Conti monopoles - La Tâche and La Romanée-Conti - is the flagship wine of the estate. Its increased quality in recent years is the primary reason Nicole Lamarche’s star is in the ascendancy. It smells so young and pure: like a basket full of freshly picked strawberries. An exquisite fine thread of acidity weaves through the finish.

The 2022 La Grande Rue Grand Cru, the famed monopole of the Domaine, has a very able bouquet with copious raspberry and wild strawberry scents, an underlying mineralité that comes through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It is well-balanced, very gentle in terms of grip, and a little spicier than the Clos Vougeot with a dash of white pepper and bay leaf towards the finish. This should age well in the bottle, but like others, it has a sense of approachability. Very fine.
Bright mid purple. The bouquet intrigues with the little touch of orange zest which always seems to be mixed in with the red fruit here. Lifted floral notes, roses and the lighter side of peonies. Sensual and sweetly ripe on the palate, the fruit more loaded towards the mid palate, and a drier tannin or two to finish. Very much a baby. Drink from 2032-2039. Tasted: November 2023.
