2022 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey, Sylvain Cathiard

2022 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey, Sylvain Cathiard

This premier cru has an enviable exposure, similar to Clos St Jacques in Gevrey. These 65 year old vines were planted by Sébastien’s great-grandfather when he was a tenant farmer. Wonderfully cool blue fruit with some ripe acidity giving it lift and drive.

Tasting notes

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru is a worthy follow-up to Cathiard's over-achieving 2021. There’s fabulous delineation on the nose; this blossoms in the glass with vivacious red fruit laced with minerals - aromatics that positively sparkle. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. It is full of tension with superb weight and depth on the graphite-tinged finish. This seriously fine Aux Thorey is destined for long-term aging.

A solid purple. A bright ripe plummy fruit comes up on the nose. There is clearly more weight here than the village wines, with the fruit hovering between red and black notes, equally distributed across the palate. Medium acidity, a balance between charm and precision. Sound and quite long. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.
