2022 Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze, Domaine Bruno Clair

2022 Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Bèze, Domaine Bruno Clair

Where the Bonnes Mares is muscular and persuasive, this is fragrant and fine, with a compelling thread of crystalline red fruit reaching to an astonishing finish. Clos de Bèze is a slightly steeper and warmer site than Chambertin next door, and the potential heights of complexity and concentration it can produce are remarkable. Most of the vines were planted in 1912, with the rest in the 1970s - affectionately still referred to as the young vines. This will be a tour de force with some years in bottle.

Tasting notes

Mid purple, fresh and silky bouquet. Just a little more discreet than either Cazetiers or Clos St-Jacques. This is quite a cerebral wine. All is there, especially further back on the palate along with some refined tannins. Quite nuanced, still discreet but long and fine, not hedonistic. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a slightly deeper and more powerful bouquet than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Exquisite definition and focus—there are more oyster shell scents here. The medium-bodied palate has finely chiseled tannins, a little chalky in texture, building wonderfully to a saline, persistent finish that exudes real breeding. A noble wine in the making.
