Tasting notes

The 2022 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the lower tier of the vineyard on soil with a lower bedrock than Roumier and Rousseau's. Matured in 70% new oak, it conveys a vivid image of the sea, or more accurately, an estuary on a cold winter's day. Just a touch of brine tinctures that black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry and bilberry fruit. Again, there’s a strong marine influence: pitted black olives and briny notes towards the long and elegant finish. It's not the best I have tasted from this vineyard, but it's a seriously fine Ruchottes nonetheless.

The 2022 Ruchottes yielded 36 hl/ha, with an alcohol of just 12.7%, apparently it is always lower here. A fresh mid purple. A super-fine complex briary nose, one could believe some stems here but it is the setting of Ruchottes, crushed alpine strawberries, but all destemmed. Superbly poised, with such a refined fruit quality and a pleasing light peppery touch at the finish. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.
