2022 Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Loups, Domaine des Lambrays

2022 Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Les Loups, Domaine des Lambrays

This comes from 0.7 hectares of premiers crus across the village: La Riotte, Blanchards, and Le Village. The gentle handling in the cellar draws out the finest qualities of the fruit here: tight red berry fruit, with a fine silky texture to the tannins, and an elegant thread of acidity. 40% whole bunch means the riper, richer fruit from the clay soils retains ethereal balance, and supple length.

Tasting notes

This cuvée no longer contains Clos des Lambrays young vines. The plot called 30 rangs (planted 2000) was in this wine up to 2021. La Riotte and Le Village remain, the 20 ares of Clos Sorbe has been added to new vineyards (see below) from Domaine Cosson, but instead there is fruit from half a hectare of Les Blanchards, also ex Cosson. Glowing purple. A beautifully lifted bouquet with 40% whole bunches, alpine strawberries, all in finesse. Then the wine builds to an extra level of intensity, more than expected from the elegance of the nose, The fruit shows additional nuances as well, entirely red fruit, some ripe cherries now showing as well. Just a few spices to finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Loups 1er Cru is the first vintage not to include fruit from the Grand Cru, as the vines have reached 22 years, so that is not blended into the Clos des Lambrays. It now includes fruit from Les Blanchard, La Riotte and Le Village (yes, the latter is a Premier Cru). This has a very perfumed, floral bouquet with crushed strawberry and wild cherry scents, potpourri and a hint of lavender - quite Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. There is good depth here and fine complexity and salinity on the finish; this reconfigured Les Loups is worth seeking out.
