2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Malconsorts, Domaine du Clos Frantin

2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Malconsorts, Domaine du Clos Frantin

This is undoubtedly one of the greatest premier cru sites in the Côte de Nuits. Clos Frantin are the proud owners of 1.75 hectares. The 2020 has an enticing aroma of defined red berries and gentle spice. The palate displayed the level of silkiness and quality of tannins you only find in the best sites of Vosne-Romanée. It is powerful but controlled, with a sumptuous depth.

Tasting notes

Closed, intense but still complex. Deep hue, violet and rose-petal nose, plenty of substance. Pure, black fruit, oak evident. An electric, energetic Vosne which has a wonderful balance of precision, acidity and density. Will age several decades.

17.5++/20

A pungent nose of wood toast and reduction introduces the supple, round and surprisingly forward medium-bodied flavors that flash evident minerality on the powerful and dusty finish that really tightens up. This youthfully austere effort is going to require extended patience before it will be ready for prime time drinking.

90—93/100

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru (Bichot are the largest owners in this Premier Cru) is another cuvée that I feel was picked a little too late (31 August). There are slight prune-like notes on the nose that just detract from the delineation and give it a Grenache-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, quite plush and decadent but it is missing amplitude and terroir-expression towards the finish.
