2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Frémiets, Comte Armand

Les Frémiets borders Pommard, and this wine has something of the character of both villages. Old vines here make a concentrated wine, with profound depth and sweet-fruited complexity. Gentle acidity and supple tannins bode well for the future.

TASTING NOTES

The 2019 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed. It has a more complex, intellectual bouquet than the Village Cru as you would expect, armed with vivid blueberry, cassis and raspberry scents, blood orange emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. I find more red fruit here compared to the Village Cru. This gains decent weight and gifts more salinity towards the chalky-textured finish. Excellent.

Domaine Comte Armand

With the Clos des Epeneaux in the hands of the Comte Armand since 1826, this estate celebrates a rich and successful history. 2014 was young Beaune native Paul Zinetti’s first vintage at the helm of the estate, and in the years to come he’s certain to grow in renown and stature. Here is a winemaker with a golden touch and high aspirations, not least to see the Epeneaux climat awarded grand cru classification. We look forward to seeing how the wines of Comte Armand develop.
