2016 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, Domaine Taupenot-Merme

A cuvée that comes from two vineyards, Les Duresses and Grands Champs. From vines planted just after the war, this has gorgeous fruit and a glossy texture. There’s mineral freshness and nice ripe tannins. Overall, very fine and well-balanced.

2016 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, Domaine Taupenot-Merme
Domaine Taupenot-Merme

In the words of Neal Martin in The Wine Advocate, this is “a domaine that has improved immensely in recent vintages, armed with an impressive array of holdings and fashioning classic, restrained Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs.” We don’t disagree. Eponymous winemaker Romain Taupenot is a delight to taste with, candid and engaging, and his wines are equally delightful. They’re a lesson in the reasons why sensitive handling of great vineyards leads to equally great wines.
