2011 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Thorey, Sylvain Cathiard

This is a very pretty Nuits-St-Georges. Bright, fragrant fruit on the nose, with cherry and wild strawberry fruit to the fore. The tannins on the palate are immediately evident, providing structure to a sweet-ripe core of red hedgerow fruit. A seam of vibrant, red-currant acidity, particularly evident on the finish, gives this a sense of poise and elegance.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

Arranging a visit to see Sébastien Cathiard can be tricky: this is a domaine where the wines come first, before commercial considerations. But this care pays dividends, with his perfectly-kept, airy cellar giving something of an insight into the wines of this much-prized domaine. It became one of Burgundy’s most in-demand addresses under Sébastien’s father, Sylvain, during the 1990s and having taken over in 2010 Sébastien has further raised its reputation.
