2001 Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru, Sylvain Cathiard

This was the last wine I tasted on my visit before heading up to Calais and I am convinced that I could still taste it when I arrived at the Eurotunnel, so concentrated were the flavours. A very classy wine indeed.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

Arranging a visit to see Sébastien Cathiard can be tricky: this is a domaine where the wines come first, before commercial considerations. But this care pays dividends, with his perfectly-kept, airy cellar giving something of an insight into the wines of this much-prized domaine. It became one of Burgundy’s most in-demand addresses under Sébastien’s father, Sylvain, during the 1990s and having taken over in 2010 Sébastien has further raised its reputation.
