Tasted April 2023. 86% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Sauvignon Gris. This is the tenth vintage of the white wine from Puygueraud, where their cool soils worked wonders in this warmer vintage, keeping a tension and freshness to the wine. They use clones from the Loire, and this vintage there's a sunny, peachy feel to the fruit, with intense mineral notes.
Creamy apricot, white pear, passion fruit and fleshy peaches, with waves of barely-there acidity. The sauvignon gris is aged in oak for 6 months, the Sauvignon Blanc not at all. 41hl/h yield, Cyril and Nicolas Thienpont. Harvest August 24 to 26.
Readers looking for a great white that won't break the bank should check out the 2022 Château Puygueraud Blanc, which is mostly Sauvignon Blanc but includes 14%, Sauvignon Gris. Made in a bright, juicy, racy style, it has attractive citrus and tart pineapple-like aromatics, medium body, a bright spine of acidity, and a kiss of minerality on the finish. It's going to be incredibly versatile on the dinner table.
A blend of 86% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Sauvignon Gris, matured partially in stainless tanks and partly in 500-liter barrels, the 2022 Puygueraud Blanc exhibits aromas of lemon oil, pear, peach, honeysuckle and spring flowers. Moderately weighted and nicely balanced with a juicy texture, the palate is harmonious with a clean, precise finish.
The 2022 Puygueraud Blanc is an airy, gracious aperitif-styled white to drink young, while the citrus, green pear, sage and floral notes remain vibrant. The blend is 86% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Sauvignon Gris, picked between August 24 and 31. This is nicely done. Tasted three times.
