2004 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

2004 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

This is a blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc and includes fruit from some seventy-year-old vines. Lighter than Haut-Brion in appearance, the Laville has a more lemon hue with greenish tints. Grapefruit aromas with a ripe currant edge emerge from the glass with toasted oak in the background. Zippy, clean fruit makes for immediate appeal – the acidity is well integrated. A mineral vein runs throughout, in a style that shows, like Haut-Brion Blanc, taut structure and admirable focus. Lingering honeyed citrus with an oily texture make for an exciting graves, contrasting in style to Haut-Brion itself, as one would expect from such an elevated Semillon content. This has plenty of potential.
