2003 Château Carbonnieux, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

2003 Château Carbonnieux, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Carbonnieux is located just ten kilometres outside Bordeaux in the appellation of Pessac-Léognan. Although the history of the château dates back some seven centuries, in wine terms the property has had something of a chequered past. A combination of poor investment, economic depression and world wars meant that by the 1950s there were only 29 hectares of vineyard remaining. In 1956 the Perrin family (incidentally, nothing to do with the Perrins of Château de Beaucastel in the Rhône) took over and undertook significant replanting programmes and investment in the property, gradually returning it to its former glory. The 2003 has good weight in the mouth with some tropical fruit cadences. On the palate the wine displays a wonderful freshness with crisp fruit salad notes of apple, pear, pineapple and tangy green kiwi leading to a long, refined and mineral finish. There is a sense of the opulence of the vintage restrained by taut acidity and a great sense of terroir.
