This year a blend of 35% Merlot, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, the wine was aged 45% in new oak, 45% one year old, and the remainder in amphora. It is a wine with well defined aromatics of violets, nutmeg and cedar spice. There is dark cherry fruit etched with chiselled and supple tannins. There is freshness and focus through the wine with a lovely lift of dried herbs on the finish. A real success for the appellation.
The 2024 Branas Grand Poujeaux contains a little more Petit Verdot this year (10%) and it was picked from September 23 to October 5. It will then be raised in 92% barriques and 8% amphorae for an expected 16 months (50% new oak). This has a lively nose with blackberry, briar, light tertiary scents and a touch of iodine. This is well defined and shows more fruit concentration than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, powdery tannins that frame piquant black fruit laced with white pepper. Though not as persistent as other vintages, this is a well-crafted and characterful Branas Grand Poujeaux. 13.2% alcohol.
The 2024 Branas Grand Poujeaux is terrific. Rich, ample and layered, this is very nicely done. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, licorice and lavender all build in the glass. The 2024 impresses with its depth and balance. This is a fine effort, especially considering the property suffered hail damage. Tasted two times.
