2023 Château Nenin, Pomerol

2023 Château Nenin, Pomerol

Tasted April 2024. 67% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.39% ABV. 40% new oak. This is the first vintage to include Cabernet Sauvignon, with vines planted in the early 2000s. Black and red plum on the palate, with some blue fruit notes and delicate exotic spice. The wine feels balanced and fresh, with only moderate alcohol for Pomerol.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Nénin is a classy wine that marries power with nuance. Cabernet Franc plays a prominent role here, and that comes through in its aromatic presence and overall feel. There's also a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, which no doubt contributes to the wine's profile as well. Rose petal, mocha, spice, licorice, leather and cedar are all laced together in this powerhouse Pomerol. I can't wait to see where this goes.

The 2023 Nenin was picked September 9 to 28 at 46hL/ha and matured in 40% new oak for a planned 16 months, including 7% vin de presse. It is the first vintage including 3% Cabernet Sauvignon from a parcel located near Trotanoy. There is quite an attractive marine/sea spray element in the aromatics that lends freshness, certainly elevating it above the Fugue. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry and fine acidity, quite saline in the mouth with a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on the finish.

A linear and structured red with blackberry, raspberry and a hint of crushed stone. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a long, intense finish. Crunchy and minerally. Classy. Precise. 67% merlot, 30% cabernet franc and 3% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2023 Nenin is very attractive, bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, dark berries, rose petals and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple palate that's pure and sensual, with a succulent core of fruit, sweet tannin and an immensely charming profile that promises a broad drinking window.

Château Nenin

Château Nenin is a leading Pomerol estate owned by the Delon family - owners of Léoville-Las-Cases, Potensac and Clos du Marquis. They took over in 1997, purchasing Château Nenin from their cousins, the Despujol family who had owned it since 1847, although the planting of the vines is attributed to the Demays in the mid-18th century. The Delons undertook a major renovation to lift the quality of the property - vines were replanted, the cellars and winery completely overhauled and Michel Rolland installed as consultant. There are 32 hectares across the Pomerol plateau, almost in a single plot, bar one small exception, making Nenin one of largest estates in Pomerol.
