2022 Château Moulin St-Georges, Grand Cru St-Emilion

2022 Château Moulin St-Georges, Grand Cru St-Emilion

Tasted April 2023. 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Full, rich and dense, with red and black cherry, bramble and black plum. Plenty of lifted complexity with mint, clove, and savoury, leathery notes, as well as some bold vanilla from oak. Powerful and fruit-driven, framed by some savoury, fine-grained tannins, and lifted on the finish by a minerally, appetising note.

Tasting notes

A luxurious feel, with velvety tannins, enjoyable ripe black fruits, gourmet touches of smoked vanilla root and liqourice, all well drawn out through the palate, and providing plenty of estate signature. A well balanced luscious wien with a saline limestone twist. 3.55ph, 100% new oak. 28hl/h yield, smaller than across the rest of the Ausone range because of 50 year old vines planted almost entirely by Alain Vauthier when he arrived 1970. Harvest September 19 to 26.

Rocking Merlot notes of ripe black cherries, currants, smoked tobacco, and melted chocolate all emerge from the 2022 Château Moulin Saint Georges, a ripe, full-bodied, opulent, seamless 2020 based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It has the density and structure of the vintage and will have 15-20 years of overall longevity.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, the 2022 Moulin St Georges is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a taut, chalky profile. It should flesh out further with additional élevage.

Fresh and framed with a juiciness but also a coolness and brightness. Medium to full body. Very balanced. Well done. Lower pH at 3.52. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.

The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges is quite rich and dense in this vintage, as is to be expected. Super-ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, menthol, spice and leather fill out the layers in a Saint-Émilion that boasts tons of fruit density and the tannins to match. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Readers should expect a Moulin Saint-Georges that is more power than finesse. I imagine the 2022 will age beautifully on its fruit. It could very well turn out to be a sleeper in this vintage. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc picked between September 19 and 26. Aging is projected to be 18 months in French oak.
