While not known for his rigid following of standard Bordeaux stylistic norms, Jean-Guillaume Prats has made an extraordinary wine this year - even if it is not, perhaps, classic St-Estèphe. Vinified at a lower temperature than normal in order to preserve freshness, Jean-Guillaume described his 2010 Cos as "aristocratic". Somewhat heady, but pleasing on the nose, with notes of dark fruit and a hint of sweet toasty oak. On the palate this is concentrated and intense, with a pure dark berry core, expressively fine tannins and a vein of almost-mineral freshness giving it some lift and poise. While still tending towards the opulent, this maintains a taut and linear frame that provides some real style and class.
