2009 Château Léoville-Las-Cases, Cru Classé St-Julien

2009 Château Léoville-Las-Cases, Cru Classé St-Julien

Opaque and brooding in the glass, the aromas exude cool, ripe black fruit and toast, with wet gravel and a note of Asian spice. Fresh and layered, with deep, wonderfully pure cassis fruit, all framed in toasty, savoury oak. This is a succulent Las Cases; no behemoth, as muscle is coupled with terrific elegance. There is no denying its intensity; there is a firm core, yet it is well-proportioned and finely tuned. For all its considerable backbone, the tannins are finely expressed, sweet, racy and long. It finishes mineral and dry, with gravelly nuances to the fore and none of the sweeter accent of a drought-vintage. Very classy, with stunning purity – this powerful Las Cases persists for minutes on the finish.
