2006 Château Canon, 1er Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

2006 Château Canon, 1er Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

Situated on the plateau of St-Emilion, Château Canon was in an ideal position when the rains of late September made their appearance, as gravity and the soil helped the water drain quickly downhill, preventing the grapes from taking in too much water. With the concentration of the fruit safeguarded, and with the Merlot (which makes up 80% of the blend) beautifully mature, Canon was fortunate indeed. On the nose there is a rich, plummy, bramble fruit character and a touch of spice. The tannins are silky fine, creating a rich, full mouthfeel, and there is an immediate sense of freshness. Dense, dark cherry and damson fruit characters are to the fore, with a backdrop of subtle mocha and a vein of minerality. This is a very well balanced and attractive wine. A real classic.
