2005 Château Moulin-St-Georges, Grand Cru St-Emilion

2005 Château Moulin-St-Georges, Grand Cru St-Emilion

Moulin-St.Georges consists of a small vineyard that borders the illustrious
Ausone. Indeed it is owned by the same family and the wine is made by
the team at Ausone. The 2005 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20%
Cabernet Franc. In recent years it appears to have developed into a more
substantial offering in line with its superior stable mate.
Intense in the glass, with bold, heady black cherry fruit on the nose, and
with notes of a floral, violety nature. The palate exudes serious ripeness,
layered and expansive with black cherry and blackberry fruit. There is a
far firmer backbone here than I recall from earlier vintages. There is
nonetheless an ostentatious side, its volume is impressive and the fruit
very seductively styled. The freshness that runs throughout the palate
offsets what might otherwise have proven a heady example.
