2005 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac
On tasting it becomes immediately apparent that Haut-Batailley is crafted in much the same way as its stable partner, Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The assemblage is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot – marginally more Cabernet than the norm. The aromas here suggest leafy blackcurrant and plum with a fresh accent. The palate is open with good richness for its level. Mid-weight with a lovely sense of vibrance and balance. A deft silky texture with characters of pure dark berry and stone-fruits render this immensely appealing. The tannins are once more finely-expressed, exuding a gentle, precise grip. Finely-tuned, cedary and elegant – very much in keeping with the style of Grand-Puy-Lacoste.
