Often given the misnomer of a second wine, Les Forts is taken from a separate vineyard parcel, entirely distinct from the vineyards that contribute to the grand vin itself. In the 2005 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 76% of the blend, the balance being Merlot. Les Forts represents just under half of this great estate's production. Suitably intense in appearance, near opaque, with reserved aromas of dark fruit and cassis. Not as evidently structural as one may have expected in this vintage, the palate shows a remarkably elegant core of deep ripe fruit, already showing notes of cedary complexity as well as hints of mocha. Refined and well-balanced, the tannins have a fine silken touch. This is classically proportioned and surely, in terms of quality, it is of second growth status. A vibrant lingering finish here.
