Harvested between 22nd and 30th September, La Conseillante’s Merlot-dominated vineyard has achieved a superb level of quality in 2004. Jean-Michel Laporte, régisseur of the estate, and with whom we tasted on our final day in the region, believes that the property has produced one of its finest efforts for many years. Fragrant red cherry and deep plum fruit signal a fine, scented nose. On the palate this is luxurious and rounded with creamy swirls of fleshy red fruit. An opulent style with good depth and a red plum acidity. This is more measured than in many of the last few vintages – with the telltale 2004 freshness running throughout. Some underlying firmness, though sweet, seductive fruit cushions its assertive structure. Admirable substance and pleasing refinement bode well for cellarage.
