2004 Château Angélus, 1er Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

2004 Château Angélus, 1er Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

Tasted twice and rated highly on both occasions, this wine was one of the darkest of the vintage. Striking complexity - spice, smoke, fragrant damsons, lovely meaty depths. Massive but not without elegance; bold, ripe tannins balanced by fruit depth and fresh but not striking acidity. Tannins need time but this is a class act. Opulent and fresh at the same time, thanks to the quality of the Cabernet Franc (slightly more than usual at 40%). No Cabernet Sauvignon because the rains came before it was harvested. 60% Merlot.
