2003 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Cru Classé Pauillac
Following the restructuring of the family estates, Xavier Borie now has complete control of his home vineyard and it was rightly with pride that he showed us his 2003. Jokingly he refers to his property as sitting on top of the Pauillac mountain, an almost high-altitude site, so he says! In reality this hill was important in 2003 as it created a natural circulation of air that cooled the vineyards, thus preserving valuable freshness in the grapes. This is a stunning wine shining purple in colour, it balances freshness with sweetness with fine structural tannins – a more true-to-type pauillac would prove hard to find. A great wine, of immense quality.
