A little over half of the production went into the Grand Vin, a compelling blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc and the remainder Petit Verdot. Fine, scented aromas of black fruit and red berry here. The palate exudes sweet ripe berry fruits and cassis. Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly in the ascendancy, though there is a succulence equally evident. In 2002, Montrose is broad-shouldered with real substance and fine yet assertive tannins. It possesses a true sense of balance with a positive, lingering finish. Finely poised and clearly delineated, there is no doubt that Montrose is on form in this vintage.
