Domaine de la Chapelle, quite simply, produces some of the world’s greatest wine. Named after the 13th-century chapel perched on the granite hill of Hermitage, the Syrah from this pocket of the Rhône valley is revered across the world. Originally produced under Paul Jaboulet Aîné, it has been bottled under its own label since 2024, with its own dedicated winery due for completion in 2026. Most of the fruit comes the steep limestone-pebble slopes of the lieux-dits Le Méal and Bessards, with vines up to a century old. Each parcel is picked and vinified separately with draconian selection. Winemaking is simple, with indigenous yeasts and around three weeks on skins, before maturation in French oak barrels for 12 months, of which at most 15% are new. Winemaker Caroline Frey returned this legendary label to its historic glory over the last two decades, but stepped back in 2025, passing the reins to Chiara Pepe, the winemaker for legendary Abruzzo estate Emidio Pepe. She works closely with Caroline's sister Delphine Frey, who now oversees all of the family's estates. This is an exciting new chapter that will build on the Frey family's work over the last two decades, with a clear focus on sustainability and commitment to the pure expression of this extraordinary terroir.
