Château Poujeaux competes with Chasse-Spleen as the top wine in Moulis. Its owner, Matthieu Cuvelier, who also owns St-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé Clos Fourtet, has worked hard to achieve this recognition. The Cuveliers bought the estate in 2008 and have systematically modernised the winery and changed the vineyard’s management, reducing yields, picking later and farming organically. They also employed top Bordeaux consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt to advise. These improvements have resulted in silky, appealing reds which get better each vintage. Poujeaux started life linked with Château Lafite, as they shared the same owner in the 16th century. Over the years the estate was split up and reformed multiple times before Matthieu Cuvelier’s predecessor put the property back together. Today it has around 68 hectares on the gravel rich soils of the Médoc and the majority of their vineyards lie in a single parcel on the Poujeaux plateau.
