Château d'Armailhac
Château d’Armailhac is a Fifth Growth in Pauillac, sitting between the illustrious Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Lafite’s Carruades de Lafite vineyard. It is owned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, along with Mouton and Lafite, and is made by the same team as those at Mouton. The estate itself dates back to the 1600s and was one of several plots from the Lafite estate to be sold off. A grand château was started but never finished, and the half-château is an eye-catching sight. The Rothschilds have owned d’Armailhac since 1933 and apply the same care and attention in the vineyards and winery as they do with their First Growths, including hand harvesting and some ageing in ex-Mouton barrels. As a result, quality has soared in recent years. Grapes are grown across gravel soils imparting d’Armailhac’s classic concentration.
