Château Branaire-Ducru
Fourth Growth Château Branaire-Ducru produces quintessential St-Julien. This sometimes overlooked property is an estate with a reputation for consistency and for remaining true to itself without being influenced by changing fashions. As a result it is gaining traction with critics and consumers alike. It was once part of the much larger Beychevelle estate, but was broken up in the 17th century to pay off debts. Significant investment was put in by Patrick Maroteaux, a banker who loved the style of St-Julien and recognised the quality of Branaire-Ducru’s vineyards. A new winery, the first gravity led system in the appellation, and reinvigoration of the vineyards have paid off. Today it is run by his son, François-Xavier Maroteaux and cellarmaster Jean-Dominique Videau, and continuity remains an essential element of their roles.
