Château Berliquet
In a triangle between Angélus, Canon and Ausone, on St-Emilion’s western limestone plateau, lies the unassuming Château Berliquet. The ancient vineyard, thought to date back to at least the 1700s, if not earlier, is notable for its fine terroir. Its grapes were used in a cooperative until 1978 where, under the direction of Patrick de Lesquen, they began to vinify at the château and Patrick saw the estate reclassified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1986 - the only château to be promoted that year. From 2008, the estate was run by Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt, who invested in the cellars and raised the quality of the winemaking to even higher levels. The estate was sold again in 2017 to Chanel and is now under the control of Nicolas Audebert - who used to make wine in Argentina at Cheval des Andes and is the technical director of Château Canon in St-Emilion and Château Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux, two of the most highly-prized estates in Bordeaux right now.
