Sicily’s most exciting and highly regarded growers

We’ve long loved the wines from Sicily: over the past few years we’ve featured a small number of growers that we think demonstrate the potential of this beautiful island. And now we’re thrilled to present a more comprehensive range of wines, that show how far Sicily has come from its reputation for bulk production. Because although it’s still Italy’s largest wine producing region, Sicily has seen something of a renaissance of late and the new generation have been focusing on making high quality wines from indigenous varieties, old vines and non-interventional and sustainable practices, transforming Sicily’s notoriety amongst fine wine drinkers.

This offer includes wines that have recently caught our eye and really showcase the diversity this island has to offer, giving you the chance to discover this truly exciting wine region that still offers incredible value. These are wines from some of the island’s most exciting growers, all available in tiny quantities. Don’t miss them!

Arianna Occhipinti

Arianna Occhipinti is a young winemaker that has helped elevate the reputation of Sicilian wines in recent years. Her wines, in particular her Frappato, have achieved cult-like status and her vineyards are located in the region of Vittoria in the southern part of the island with her winery residing on one of the oldest wine routes ever attested. Her approach is to use minimal sulphur and make her wines as naturally as possible to convey the true soul of the region into her wines.

Eduardo Acosta

Originating from the Spanish island of Tenerife, Eduardo Acosta travelled to Sicily following his wine studies and worked with both Arianna Occhipinti and the Passopisciaro winery before starting his own project. 2014 was Eduardo’s first vintage from vineyards he had leased from the northern slopes of Etna, however as he made the wine in Arianna’s winery he could only legally label the wine IGT Terre Siciliane. Having found a building to make the wine for the 2018 vintage in Etna, he has decided to keep the wine as IGT rather than changing to Etna DOC.

SRC Vini

This relatively new estate was set up in 2013 by winemaker Rosario (Rosri) Parasiliti, growing from 0.5 hectares to around 8 hectares, with all the vineyards located on the impressive slopes of Mount Etna. Rori was convinced by friend and fellow winemaker Alberto Graci to make wine here and has never looked back since. Rori works organically on vineyards situated at 1,000 metres of altitude, planted on historic, and more recent (1981!) lava flows. In 2016, he built a new cellar, accommodating cement and large botti for their wines made from tiny yields

Villagrande

Situated to the east of Mount Etna, the Nicolosi family have farmed these lands since the 17th century, with Don Carmelo Nicolosi named Baron of Villagrande by Emperor Charles VI of Augsburg in 1727. And when Etna was made a DOC in 1968, descendant Carlo Nicolosi Asmundo was key in seeing it through. This is as historic as Etna gets. Most of the vineyards are based in the Contrada of Milo, an area that is cooler than the north part due to more wind and rain, with the grapes benefitting from diurnal fluctuations and providing crisp acidities and slightly lower alcohols. Today, Marco is at the helm, and the wines are some of the most complex, charming and expressive wines from anywhere in Italy.
