2008 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

2008 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

Apart from the quality of its wine, Château Haut-Batailley has another claim to fame as the last Cru Classé property to be divided. This took place in 1942 when the owners Marcel and François Borie decided to split the property to avoid inheritance tax. And so were born Châteaux Batailley, owned by Marcel, and Haut-Batailley, owned by François. Château Haut-Batailley is now managed by Xavier Borie, who also manages Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Both properties show a distinctive sense of refinement and purity, a hallmark of Xavier’s involvement.
Elegant and pure, this is a classically-proportioned Pauillac. Dark berry fruits, graphite and a touch of woodsmoke on the nose, lead into a pure palate that displays notes of cassis and black cherries. The tannins are superbly-fine, silky and textural and there is a vein of stony minerality that gives a beautiful sense of drive. Perfect for any lovers of traditional claret, this is beginning to drink well now, but will also keep for several more years, gaining complexity.
