Taking its name from the Latin for blood of Jupiter, Sangiovese’s home is Tuscany where it produces wines with the tannins and acidity to perfectly match Italy’s rich culinary tradition. Complicating the story, Sangiovese goes under numerous names including Brunello in Montalcino and Prugnolo in Montepulciano. With the emergence of Super-Tuscans over recent decades winemakers have experimented with blending Sangiovese with international varieties, often with spectacular results.
